When some messages appear (for example, requests to load a tray or a message that a previous print job is still in the printer memory), you can press √ (Select button) to print, or to press Stop to clear the job and eliminate the message.
|02||Warming Up. This is commonly associated with printer cable or driver problems.|
|10||Supplies Memory Error. Your printer has a problem with the toner cartridge chip, which it's unable to read. This is the electronic information, or e-label, on the print cartridge.|
|11||Paper Out. If your printer isn't out of paper, this probably means there's a problem with the paper tray or paper sensor.|
|12||Open or No EP. If you printer does have toner cartridges installed correctly, this means either a cover is open or you may have defective cooling fans or PS5 sensors.|
|13||Paper Jam. Your printer has a paper jam. Paper jams can occur at four stages: pickup, printing, fusing and exit. Modern HP printers will indicate where the jam has occurred. If using thick paper, check the HP paper guide for your printer.|
|14||No EP Cartridge. Your printer either doesn't have a toner cartridge installed or doesn't recognise one that is.|
|16||Toner Low. This normally means that your toner cartridge is either low on toner or empty. However it may mean that the remaining printer toner isn't distributed evenly.|
|20||Memory Overflow. Your print job exceeds the current memory capacity of the printer.|
|21||Print Overrun. Your print job exceeds the current memory capacity of the printer.|
|22||I/O Configuration. There's a communication problem between the printer and the computer.|
|24||Job Memory Full. Too many print jobs have been send to the printer, or the job is too complex for the printer memory to process.|
|25||XXX Memory Full. Too many print jobs have been send to the printer, or job is too complex for the printer memory to process.|
|30||PS Error 16. This is commonly associated with PostScript firmware errors. It may also be triggered by PCL files being sent while the print is in PS mode or a bad PostScript file.|
|30.1.1||Disk Failure. Your printer's hard disk drive has crashed.|
|40||Data Transfer Error. The connection between the computer and printer has been broken.|
|41||Temporary Print Engine Error. The printer has experienced a temporary printer engine error, which can normally be easily resolved.|
|49||Printer Error or Communication Error. There can be a few causes of this error depending on the model, which tend to be associated with firmware errors, cable problems or hardware issues.|
|50.1||Low temperature. Fuser is failing to warm up.|
|50.2||Warm up failure. The warm-up period timed out. This could be a power supply or firmware issue.|
|50.3||High temperature. The main thermistor is too hot. Likely to be a control circuit issue.|
|50.4||Faulty fuser (or Bad AC line voltage). Moderately likely to be bad mains supply (UPS, generator, extensions)|
|50.5||Inconsistent fuser or Wrong type fuser installed. The printer has detected the wrong fuser.|
|50.6||Open fuser. Fuser heater cut-off. The fuser possibly overheated.|
|50.7||Fuser pressure release mechanism failure.|

|55||Internal Communication Problem / Controller Error. Most likely a poor connection between the DC controller and the formatter.|
|56||Printer Device Error. This error message can relate to a number of different issues depending upon the model.|

HP Printer Control-Panel Buttons
Printer resets and power-on modes
The following sections describe the types of printer resets and power-on modes.
A cold reset unlocks menus that have been previously locked and sets all control panel menu items (including EIO settings) back to the factory defaults. However, it does not clear the values in the service menu (such as the serial number and page counts).
To perform a cold reset:
- Turn the printer off.
- Turn the printer on. When the printer begins its memory count, press and hold down the Select ( √ ) button until all three printer control-panel lights flash once and then remain on. This might take up to 10 seconds.
- After the message SELECT LANGUAGE appears on the display, press the Up Arrow ( Λ) button
or the Down Arrow (∇ ) button until COLD RESET is highlighted.
- Press the Select ( √) button. The printer performs a cold reset and then continues its power-on sequence.
- Check all I/O settings and reset any customer-set printer configuration values.
If the printer contains an optional HP Jetdirect print server, and you cannot communicate with the printer over the network, verify that the print server is operating. Print a configuration page (see Configuration page on page 146). If the Jetdirect card does not appear under “Installed personalities and options” on the configuration page, reseat or replace the Jetdirect EIO card. See the troubleshooting section of the HP Jetdirect Print Server Software Administrators Guide.
When the HP Jetdirect print server is installed correctly, print a Jetdirect page (this page automatically prints when a Jetdirect print server is installed and a configuration page is printed). The Jetdirect page contains valuable network-related information about the printer.
If the host system and printer are still not communicating, replace the formatter (see Formatter on page 89) and the EIO card, and then reconfigure the printer.

Media Handling Problems
If media is feeding incorrectly, use the information in this section to identify and resolve the problem.
Multiple pages feed – Cause and Solution
- The tray 1 separation pad is worn. Replace the tray cassette.
- Too much media (particularly envelopes) is loaded in tray 1. Remove some of the media and resend the print job.
- The media pick-up roller for that tray is worn or damaged Replace the pick-up roller.
- The media edges are locked together. Flex the media stack before loading it into the printer. Do not fan the media.
- Tray 2 is defective. Replace the tray.
- The spring pushing the separation pad assembly is defective. Replace the tray cassette.
Pages are wrinkled or folded – Cause and Solution
- The feed rollers or registration rollers are dirty or defective. Replace the affected rollers.
- The paper path contains foreign substances or dirt. Remove any foreign substances or dirt from the paper path.
- The cartridge shutter open/close mechanism is damaged. The shutter in the print cartridge should open as you insert the cartridge. If a shutter does not open, replace the print cartridge.
- The registration assembly is defective. If the registration arm is dirty, clean it.
- The fuser inlet guide is dirty. Replace the fuser.
- The fuser pressure roller is dirty or damaged. Run several cleaning pages through the printer.
Pages are skewed – Cause and Solution
- Paper dust or dirt has accumulated on the media pick-up separation roller. Clean or replace the separation roller.
- The media pick-up roller may be worn irregularly. Replace the affected roller and separation pad assembly.
- The registration assembly is defective. Replace the registration assembly.
- Tray 2 is defective. Replace tray 2.
